The origin of the name Lavoute-Chilhac dates back to Latin times, where “volta”, meaning “loop”, evokes the winding shape of theAllier that encircles the village. The founding charter of the priory “Sainte-Croix de La Volte”, signed in 1025 by Odilon de Mercœur, marked the beginning of a history closely linked to this Cluniac site.
Nestled between a rocky cirque and the meanders of theAllier, the village of Lavoute-Chilhac has ingeniously adapted to its environment. Although the old priory has disappeared and the current buildings date mainly from the 18th century, their layout around the 15th-century Sainte-Croix priory church testifies to their medieval past.
